Memberships and Initiatives

Our commitment to sustainability is also expressed in membership to networks and associations as well as through our signature to declarations.


Continental has been a member of econsense – the Forum for Sustainable Development of German Business e.V. – since January 2016. econsense was established in 2000 on the initiative of the Federation of German Industries e.V. (BDI).

As an expert technical dialog partner, econsense provides a means of facilitating communication between politics, science, media, and business for the further development of sustainability issues relevant to the company.


Women’s Empowerment Principles

Continental has endorsed the "Women's Empowerment Principles" since March 2015. Stemming from a cooperation between the United Nations Global Compact and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the seven principles offer guidance to business on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community.

Continental has been a participant in the "United Nations Global Compact" (GC) and a member of the German GC Network since October 2012. This demonstrates our commitment to the Global Compact's ten principles for human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.

Luxembourg Declaration on Workplace Health Promotion

By signing the "Luxembourg Declaration on Workplace Health Promotion in the European Union" in May 2010, Continental demonstrates that it takes into account its corporate responsibility with regards to promoting occupational health and safety.

The declaration was adopted by the members of the European Network for Workplace Health Promotion (ENWHP) in 1997 to promote occupational health and safety in the companies of the EU member states and to encourage them to attach greater importance to workplace health promotion.

Diversity Charter  

Not only does Continental fulfill its obligation with regard to diversity internally, it also acknowledges its commitment externally. This was made clear in December 2008 when the company signed the "Diversity Charter," an initiative aimed at promoting diversity within companies.

European Road Safety Charter

Continental signed the "European Road Safety Charter" in November 2007. The charter calls on and encourages all groups in society to improve road safety in Europe and to reduce significantly the number of fatalities.

World Business Council for Sustainable Development

The "World Business Council for Sustainable Development" (WBCSD), founded in 1995, is a forerunner and catalyst on the path to sustainable development The aim of this alliance is to promote the role of ecological efficiency, innovation, and corporate social responsibility. For this purpose, the WBCSD intends to strengthen cooperation between business, governments, and non-governmental organizations.
